I don't understand how hippies sitting around with the lights off burning candles is supposed to help anything. Surely the candles release more greenhouse gas than the lightbulbs would.
we did it here, though i usually turn the lights out when i am watching tv anyway.
@anonymous, my impression is that it's more about getting people to think about what they are doing. If all the lights go off people stop and take notice.
Anon, actually I'm confident that the "carbon footprint" caused by the burning candles that were lit for Earth Hour were less than 1% that the regular impact would've been for keeping the lights on.
But Mira is quite right. It's really about the awareness. The awareness that we can, in fact, do something.
My fiancee has a friend who's family just leaves everything on. They aren't evil people. They're just thoughtless about it. They do not realize what it is that they do. When we visit their house, it's astounding. The two teenagers leave the house and in the rooms that they were in, the televisions, play station, lights, stereo... it's all left on. As if "on" is the natural state for all of them. The mom complains that their electric bill is sometimes over $500 (it's just under a 3000 sq ft house) - it's all boggling to me.
But I'm kinda tree huggy I guess.
Oh, and turn the water off while you are brushing your teeth too - it's amazing how much water we can all save if we just are a little more thoughtful. It's not like you need it running to be able to brush, right? ;)

Thanks for the heads up!
Glad to have passed it along. I wish I'd heard about it sooner - I guess that shows how out of the loop I am with the day to day real world news.
